Osprey Aether 60 Review

Osprey was founded in 1974 as a company where customers would come to get made-to-order, custom-fitted backpacks. This idea of personal relationships has carried forward throughout Osprey’s history, and even today on their website you can use the “packfinder” feature to find the backpack perfectly suited to your needs. Throughout our Osprey Aether 60 review we found this bag is one of their many great products; this medium-weight pack is geared toward backpacking and mountaineering, and is built with your comfort and transport needs in mind.

Comfort

This backpack is very comfortable and easy to wear for extended periods of time. The adjustment straps are easy to use and make it quite simple to adjust for your preferred fit. The shoulder pads are effective and the weight in the pack feels like it is evenly distributed during use. It is clear that a lot of thought went into the design of the suspension system in this pack. Additionally, the hip belt is moldable, allowing the pack to fit perfectly to your body within a couple of days.

Organizational storage

This pack has an impressive amount of storage space. Aside from the pack’s main compartment, some of the storage options include: zippered hip belt pockets, a sleeping bag compartment, an extra hydration sleeve, stretch mesh side and front pockets, and a removable, dual compartment top lid. You also have the option of attaching an accessory pack using the Aether 60’s built-in cord loops.

Appearance

This bag has a sleek and simple look; it embodies a perfect combination of form and functionality. The Aether 60 comes in three colors: Arroyo Red, Midnight Blue, and Bonsai Green.

Water resistance

This bag is made of high-quality, durable material. Although the backpack is not expressly advertised as water resistant, the material should hold up in many types of weather. For users who think they will be in the rain often, the bag does feature two water-resistant hip belt pockets to keep frequently used and important items safe from water. Additionally, for a small additional cost, a rain cover can be purchased from Osprey.

Public opinion

In this section of our review we look to the consumers to get a better understanding of the product. We found that by analyzing real consumers reviews we could truly understand how our readers will receive the product. We weigh this part of our review quite heavily in our ratings as no one knows better of the products quality than the final consumer. To do this analysis we read over hundreds of reviews from all over the web and summarize their thoughts. Here is what the users of the Aether 60 had to say.

The Good

 Comfort

Almost every user of this bag commented on its comfort. Many owners had taken extensive trips with this bag all over the world. Although Osprey advertises this bag as being good for a weeklong trip on its website, users have carried this bag for weeks at a time and had no issue with its comfort or storage. Consumers are very happy with the adjustable strap, including the moldable belt. Several people commented that even though they could not get the bag custom fitted in stores, they still noticed that it molded to their body quite nicely. Many owners also expressed appreciation for the bag’s compression system, noting that unlike many similar packs, this pack compresses from the back and does a great job at flattening the bag evenly, making it much easier to carry.

Materials

Although this bag does not expressly advertise itself as water resistant, it is hard to find complaints about the bag’s weatherproof features. Osprey is a company that is known for very high-quality, personalized designs, so while the materials could benefit from an additional raincover, it does not appear the type of material has a negative impact on usability of the bag in all types of weather.

Durability

This is a bag that many owners have said they have used for years, on several extended trips. Several customers have said that a travel companion bought a different Osprey bag, or a bag from another company, around the same time and the Aether 60 proved more durable than both Osprey and non-Osprey offerings.

Lightweight

Although this is not considered an ultra light bag, many users have commented on the lightness of the pack. One reviewer called this bag one of the lightest options of the non-ultra-light packs on the market.

Storage

Many users have noted that this bag fits much more than they ever expected. Many customers report being able to use a smaller size pack than they would typically buy in other brands, because the storage space in this backpack is so exceptional.

The Bad

Despite Ample Storage, Hard to Organize

Several reviewers said they had to purchase additional organizational packs to help them organize this bag. Although there is an impressive amount of storage space, users do express a desire for more pockets to separate and easily find items. However, this is one of the only frequent criticisms of this pack and this issue does not seem to dissuade people from leaving 4 or 5-star reviews.

Sleeping Back Compartment is Small

A few users have said their sleeping bag did not easily fit in the sleeping back compartment. Although this was not a common complaint, it did arise a couple of times. It seems to be mitigated by attaching an additional sleeping bag sack to the bag.

The reviews of this pack were overwhelmingly positive. Many consumers called this the best pack they have ever used. Comfort, durability, and storage were some of the themes that were found throughout many of the positive reviews.

Bang for Your Buck

Although this pack is slightly more expensive than some similar options on the market, its quality and durability make it worth the price if you are a person who takes a few trips per year that would necessitate this type of pack.

The Verdict

We believe the Aether 60 is a great option for people who want a lightweight, durable pack for trips lasting from a couple of days up to a couple of weeks. This bag is comfortable and well-designed, and has been very well-received among the backpacking community.
