Osprey Talon 11 Review

When Osprey updated the Talon series in 2014, the company went to great lengths to maintain the fit and style which made the pack so popular throughout the years while also improving the design and making the pack lighter. Throughout our Osprey Talon 11 review we found this bag boasts a multifunctional design making the pack perfectly comfortable whether you are enjoying a mountain hike or biking at 30 mph.

Outside of being functional, the comfort of the Osprey Talon 11 is its greatest attribute. With key trademarked features being the Airscape™ backpanel which is a molded foam back panel with an air chimney for ventilation and the Biostretch™ harness with foam straps covered in mesh also designed for ventilation. Osprey claims that the pack is comfortable regardless if you are walking, running, or biking. Indeed, the pack is designed for all three activities.

Organizational Storage

The primary function of a pack is to provide storage and the Osprey Talon 11 accomplishes this quite well. Making the most of the back, Osprey has placed pockets on the hipbelt, a front slash pocket and an inside mesh pocket for essential items. A wide opening for the main compartment allows instant access to everything inside. The Osprey Talon 11’s ability to store doesn’t stop at the pockets or compartment. The pack also has an external hydration sleeve, a LidLock™ helmet attachment and front panel bungee for light layers or whatever else you can wrap up in the bungee.

Osprey Talon 11 hiking pack

The Osprey Talon 11, which is available in four vibrant colors, is a sharp looking bag by anyone’s standards. For most outdoor enthusiasts, whether or not their bag is aesthetically pleasing is secondary to how well it functions. With that being said, Osprey still made real effort to create a stunning bag. The back displays a wave-like design on the front and is rather striking with a simple yet modern look.

Other Features

Mentioned in the Organizational Storage section, the Lidlock™ helmet attachment allows users to easily and quickly secure their bike helmet when it’s not being used. Additionally, on the exterior of the Osprey Talon 11 you will find the Stow-On-The-Go™ trekking pole attachment system as well as a bungee ice tool attachment loop. Finally, the ErgoPull™ hip belt closure helps the back to sit more comfortably and securely.

Public Opinion

There is no shortage of praise for the Osprey Talon 11. We’ve analyzed the reviews from consumers all over the spectrum from seasoned hikers and biking veterans to casual walkers just looking for a way to store their stuff. The only challenge was to find something about the Osprey Talon 11 to criticize.

The Good

Osprey really went above and beyond to make the Talon 11 as comfortable as possible. Users describe running or walking with heavy items inside the bag and still being comfortable. Perhaps the most uncomfortable part of carrying a pack on your back when it’s warm outside is the seemingly inevitable back sweat. Osprey, however, have done a great job of minimizing this with the Airscape™ backpanel which has what it describes as an air chimney for ventilation. Finally, users were also quite pleased that the Osprey Talon 11 did not move around while running despite having several items inside. This can be attributed to the ErgoPull™ hipbelt closure and the sternum strap.

Being a pack specifically designed for use outdoors, the Osprey Talon 11 is capable of taking a beating. Reviewers described regular use for more than two years before noticing visible wear on the pack. As with any Osprey product, the company is so sure of their products’ ability to function without defect that they will fix or replace the Talon 11 regardless of when it was purchased and why it is damaged. Furthermore, they will do it for free.

Reviewers were unanimous in describing the Osprey Talon 11 as lightweight. The bag is not a large bag but is still designed well enough to have plenty of storage without becoming too clunky or heavy. Even if you decide to pack heavy items, additional buckles and weight distribution design help to make the pack still feel lightweight.

The Bad

External Hydration Sleeve

There was some clamor regarding the external hydration sleeve. It seems that users had some difficulty inserting a bladder into the sleeve, whether the bladder was full or empty. However difficult it may be, hydration is of the utmost importance when you’re spending a lot of time outdoors and it sure beats carrying a separate, unattached bladder.

It was clear after analyzing just a few reviews that users were overwhelmingly pleased with the Osprey Talon 11. However, we still did our due diligence and were unable to find very many displeased consumers. Even users with some degree of loyalty to other brands found a seemingly superior product in the Osprey Talon 11.

Bang for Your Buck

A high-quality pack designed for hiking, running, or biking at under $100 is a great bargain. Though not specifically designed for travel, the Osprey Talon 11 could also function for long excursions depending on the situation. That sort of functionality could cost much more. Factor in the lifetime warranty and Osprey has truly created a product worth every penny.

Talon 11 FAQ’s

Why does the Talon 11 have different sizes?

Osprey offers the Talon 11 in two different sizes – Small/Medium and Medium/Large. The measurements top to bottom are 18 inches and 20 inches respectively. This means that the Medium/Large is designed for a taller wearer. It’s worth pointing out that Osprey has a sizing chart on its website.

Does the Talon 11 come with a bladder?

The Verdict

The Osprey Talon 11 is designed specifically for hiking, running or biking and it excels as one of the best bags for that market. With features designed to maximize functionality without sacrificing comfort, Osprey is doing a great job of ensuring that its main product continues to be at the top of its niche. Consumers all agree that the Osprey Talon 11 is nearly perfect and its multifunctional design make it a must-have for outdoor enthusiasts.
