Osprey Volt 75 Review

Osprey was founded in 1974 as a company where customers would come to get made-to-order, custom-fitted backpacks. This idea of personal relationships has carried forward throughout Osprey’s history, and even today on their website you can use the “packfinder” feature to find the backpack perfectly suited to your needs. Throughout our Osprey Volt 75 review we found this is one of their simpler packs, and is geared toward customers who do not need the “bells and whistles” of a more advanced pack.

This is a simple pack designed for hikers ready to get up and go, without a lot of extra features. There are arguably more comfortable Osprey packs on the market, which are more adjustable to a variety of body types. However, Osprey packs are known for high quality, comfortable materials. Although this pack is slightly less adjustable than others, it still has a comfortable fit. Additionally, although it is a fairly large pack, it can be compressed and made smaller in order to comfortably carry a lighter load.

Organizational storage

This pack is large enough to store things for a week-long hike, possibly even longer. Although the pack is simple, there are many different pockets to help organize the pack. The Osprey Volt 75 includes zippered hipbelt pockets to store things that are used often, a stretch mesh front and side pockets, a floating top pocket that can hold small items and can also extend to help with oversized load, an internal hydration sleeve, and a sleeping bag compartment. The bag also includes several external attachments including tool attachment, sleeping pad straps, and a trekking pole attachment.

This pack is not as sleek as some other Osprey products; it is known as being a very simple pack. However, it is made out of Opsrey’s high quality materials, and still has a professional look about it. The Volt 75 comes in two colors: Carmine Red and Tar Black. Both colors include some patches of grey, making for a nice contrast.

Water resistance

This bag is made of high-quality, durable material. Although the backpack is not expressly advertised as water resistant, the material should hold up in many types of weather. Additionally, for a small additional cost, a rain cover can be purchased from Osprey.

Public opinion

In this section of our review we look to the consumers to get a better understanding of the product. We found that by analyzing real consumers reviews we could truly understand how our readers will receive the product. We weigh this part of our review quite heavily in our ratings as no one knows better of the products quality than the final consumer. To do this analysis we read over hundreds of reviews from all over the web and summarize their thoughts. Here is what the users of the Volt 75 had to say.

The Good

Many owners of this pack comment on its light weight and comfort. A few users have had issues with the hip straps and pads, but they often note that these issues could have been alleviated had they tried the pack on before buying it. Most customers agree that this pack can hold approximately 40 pounds of weight comfortably, and have no issue comfortably wearing this bag for an extended day hike or multi-night hikes. Additionally, people are impressed with this pack’s light weight; although it does not qualify as an ultra light pack, users are very pleased with its weight, especially considering all it can carry.

Although this bag does not expressly advertise itself as water resistant, it is hard to find complaints about the bag’s weatherproof features. Osprey is a company that is known for very high-quality, personalized designs, so while the materials could benefit from an additional rain cover, it does not appear the type of material has a negative impact on usability of the bag in all types of weather.

Most users seem to load between 40-50 pounds and note that the pack is very durable. One user called this pack a “Durable pack at an excellent value for the quality.” Several users have taken this pack on multi-day hikes and have had no issues. Osprey products are known for their durability and this pack seems to be no different.

Users are very pleased with this pack’s light weight. Customers are also happy at how easily this pack can be compressed in the event that users are carrying a smaller load.

Customers are very impressed with this bag’s storage. They do recommend not overloading it with weight much heavier than 40 pounds, but in terms of storage people are very pleased. This bag has many pockets and can hold plenty of items. Several users even note that the bag had room to spare after they had packed all of the items needed for their trek.

The Bad

Straps not as strong as other Osprey packs

Several users did note that they were not as happy with the front or hip straps as they have been in the past with other Osprey products. Although these unhappy customers often noted that their concerns probably could have been alleviated had they tried the bag on in store before purchasing, this does not change the fact that this bag is just simpler and more “bare bones” than other Osprey packs. A few users also advised fellow customers not to load more than approximately 40-50 pounds in the bag, at the most. That being said, pack owners did say that this bag was very easy to adjust and that adjustments could happen quickly.

The reviews of this pack were mainly positive. Customers appreciate the ample storage space and durability of this product.

Bang for Your Buck

This bag is around a higher scale price, and although that it may seem expensive, there were no obvious complaints about the price from bag owners. Several users noted that the price was well worth it for the storage and quality that this bag provides.

The Verdict

The Osprey 75 is a great pack for people who want something simple and do not need all the “bells and whistles,” but who still want ample storage space and pockets. Users who purchase this bag are pleased with the classic Osprey quality and materials. This pack is most appropriate for long-day hikes or for multi-day hikes as long as the weight does not exceed 40-50 pounds.
